“When you turn it on and the GPS signal gets acquired, the course you are on comes up listed along with other nearby courses. Very easy to use with the touch screen. The Garmin Approach G5 itself snaps securely onto the belt clip without a lot of looking or fumbling.”

“I had a Sky Caddie SG4 no problems with it other than I lost it. So I did the research and purchased a Callaway UPro, big mistake! GPS quit 1 month after the 6 month warranty ended. Called support no help and no credit for all the courses I paid for. I asked the guys at Golfsmith what one they liked and bought the Garmin Approach G5. What can I say, uses regular batteries 2-AAs, no cost to download courses or updates. Best of all it’s a Garmin, bulletproof. 1 to 2 seconds after you pull out of your pocket it locks in on a signal, no waiting, it’s great.”

“No buttons to push so easy to use, water & shock proof. I dropped a couple times on cart path, just little scratches, the Garmin Approach G5 worked fine.”

“The Garmin Approach G5  continues in the Garmin tradition of excellence with GPS technology. I have two other products from Garmin, and they are outstanding as well. The fact that no subscription is required to access golf courses all over the United States makes the Garmin Approach G5 a great deal. I have used it for several rounds and have found it to be extremely accurate, and the course maps to be very detailed. All in all, this is an excellent unit.”

Review By George Madden (Glenmoore, PA)

“My son and I used his new Garmin Approach G5 on a local course for the first time and it performed great. No more looking for markers or taking the time to walk off an estimate (OK – especially when I’m not in the fairway). We have some large greens thankfully and being able to simply move the flag on the device for a much more accurate reading is super. Also, those few great drives I had – the Garmin Approach G5 made it simple to get the exact yardage (did not break any records though). Only 1 of my 7 (regular home area) courses is not programmed in yet but I see it’s on schedule in the next update. If yours isn’t, simply let Garmin know like I did. The Garmin Approach G5 is a great unit, now if only my golf got better Update note: Today (4/26) I downloaded Garmin’s latest course database to the device and now all my courses are available.”

“Bought the Garmin Approach G5 after reading good reviews here. I downloaded the latest database and was pleased to find that it covers all local courses. The Garmin Approach G5 is very easy to use with touch screen, still have not had to read the manual yet after 5 rounds Knowing exact distance (to target, hazards, etc) seems to help build confidence and my game has improved significantly. Played a local private club today (Fazio design); the Garmin Approach G5 was so convenient and accurate that our caddy ended up using my G5 instead of his laser range finder. Update (7/1/09). Tried Lithium AA batteries from Energizer, after 4 rounds the indicator still shows 3/4 power left. Also, the latest database has 9400 courses!”

It seems as though the biggest knock I can find with the Garmin Approach G5 is the difficulty in reading the display. This continues to be an issue for some players. Also a couple of folks reported their units have an issue with just shutting down all together, then you are required to send it in for repair or replacement, which can take up to 30 days.
